Walking Through Jewish New York – Our Next Dor Teen Trip

By Deborah Niederman, RJE

We ate and walked our way across New York City on this year’s Next Dor teen trip, and every step, and every bite, was worth it. Our goal was to explore the American Jewish experience and understand the unique role New York City plays in that story – and in our own unfolding stories.

From the moment we arrived, our teens dove into the layers of Jewish New York. At Ellis Island and the Tenement Museum, they explored the immigrant journey. On the Lower East Side, they tasted the foods that sustained Jewish newcomers and learned about the communities that shaped the neighborhood. They skated under the city lights, experienced the magic of Broadway, and felt the energy of a city built in part by Jewish visionaries.

Food and theater were not just fun additions – they were essential parts of the learning. Jewish immigrants helped shape New York through entrepreneurship, art, storytelling, and music. Their influence is woven into the fabric of American culture, and our teens experienced that legacy firsthand.

Walking the Lower East Side, students learned about the early 20th-century kosher meat protests, when Jewish women organized to fight rising food prices and advocate for their families. At Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, they reflected on the courage it took to arrive in a new land with little more than hope. Inside recreated tenement apartments, they gained a deeper understanding of the crowded conditions, long workdays, and tight-knit communities that defined immigrant life.

Food became its own classroom. On our walking food tour, students discovered how recipes carry memory and identity across generations. At a Broadway show, they saw how Jewish writers and composers helped shape American theater, bringing stories, humor, and music that continue to resonate nationwide.

Most meaningful was the connection our teens felt – to history, to one another, and to their own Jewish journeys. They returned home with more than knowledge. They came back with perspective, pride, and a deeper appreciation for the courage and creativity that helped build the world they live in today.

We are deeply grateful to the Temple Shalom Brotherhood for their generous support, which made this powerful and immersive experience possible. Because of their partnership, our teens can continue exploring Jewish history, identity, and leadership in ways that are meaningful and unforgettable.
