Temple Shalom Celebrates Kayla Shavelson’s Leadership

By Deborah Niederman, RJE

One of the most meaningful parts of being a kehillah kedoshah, a holy community, is celebrating the achievements of our members. Today, we are proud to recognize an incredible milestone.

Temple Shalom is thrilled to share that Kayla Shavelson has been elected as the 42nd Regional N’siah of BBYO’s North Texas Oklahoma region. In this role, she will help shape the experience of Jewish teens across the entire region, guiding programs, building connections, and strengthening community.

Kayla’s journey to this moment reflects dedication, leadership, and heart. She began in her chapter, Judy Kravitz BBG, as MIT Mom, where she welcomed new members and helped them feel at home. From there, she stepped into the role of Chapter N’siah, leading with intention and creating an inclusive, meaningful environment for her peers.

She then took on a regional role as the 12th Regional Mekasheret, focusing on recruitment and outreach. Through this work, Kayla helped expand BBYO’s reach, connecting more teens to Jewish life and community. Each step along the way has deepened her commitment and passion.

At Temple Shalom, we are especially proud to know Kayla as one of our own. On Sunday mornings, she serves as an Ozeret, supporting our community with care, organization, and leadership. She has also inspired many teens within our congregation to get involved in BBYO, acting as a true ambassador for Jewish teen engagement.

Kayla represents the values we strive to nurture, joy, friendship, leadership, and a strong sense of community. Her story is a reminder that when teens are given the opportunity to lead, they not only grow, they help others grow with them.

Mazal tov, Kayla. We are so proud of you.
